Get on board

Sail to Denmark and enjoy the experience of a lifetime as part of The Tall Ships Races 2018. Don't delay as applications close on 28th February 2018!

Sunderland is recruiting sail trainees to act as crew on some of the magnificent ships setting sail from the city at the start of next year’s Tall Ships Races.

Tall Ship Sail Trainees will spend 7 nights on-board one of the participating vessels on a voyage to Esbjerg in Denmark from Friday 13 July until Friday 20 July 2018. In Esbjerg trainees will take part in the festival-like Crew Parade and Prize-Giving Ceremony before flying back to the UK.

An amazing experience

Experience the adventure of crashing through the waves, far out to sea, on a ship where you know you're an essential part of the team. You can be at the helm steering or in the galley preparing dinner, scrubbing the decks or hoisting sails, but whatever you're doing you'll be part of a watch and you'll have an experience you'll never forget. With help from the ships' captains and crew, trainees will be given the chance to learn team and leadership skills, build self-confidence and literally learn the ropes.

Sunderland Sail Trainee Brandon Barker has experienced two voyages on the fully accessible Sail Training Ship Lord Nelson and is looking forward to re-joining the ship in July. He said:

“The crew were fantastic and gave everyone the chance to do as much as they could. Every aspect of sailing the ship was made available, from setting the sails and going up the mast to taking watch and steering her. We had a great time and I’m looking forward to getting back on board in July. I would encourage anyone thinking about this to go for it - you won't regret it!"
