The Tall Ships Races Sunderland 2018 may be a once in a generation opportunity for our city. The help of volunteers is required to make it happen, and in return our Tall Ships Event Makers will be rewarded with rich memories of being a part of something special.

Over 350 people have been recruited for roles including:

  • Ship Liaison Officer – Our SLOs will be key points of contact for their assigned ships’ captains and crew and will ensure that they have everything that they require from arrival through to departure
  • Technical Liaison Officer – Technically skilled, our TLOs will be constituent members of the ship greeting party as they arrive at The Port of Sunderland and will be the first point of contact for technical issues
  • Event Support – This is a busy and high profile role supporting the event and race organising teams, helping to run the media, crew and volunteer centres
  • Event Coordinator – duties may include; decorating the event space, welcoming visitors, reuniting lost people with their parties, distributing information, selling merchandise, organising crew activities and escorting guests and media

Recruitment for Tall Ships Event Makers has now closed, but you may volunteer at other Sunderland City events by contacting the Active Sunderland team at – more information is available at
